Vaccines for Children: The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has received emergency use authorization for children 5-11. The dose for this age group is one-third of the dosage of the vaccine for older adolescents and adults.
According to Pfizer/BioNTech, in participants 5 to 11 years of age, the vaccine was “safe, well tolerated and showed robust neutralizing antibody responses.” Pfizer and BioNTech announced the results in a statement that did not include detailed data from the trial. The findings have not yet been peer-reviewed nor published in a scientific journal.
Trial results for children 6mo-4 yrs of age could come later this year, the pharmaceutical companies said. Results from Moderna’s vaccine trials in children under 12 are expected around the fourth quarter of this year. Johnson & Johnson has planned four Phase 3 studies in children for its COVID-19 vaccine. No timeline on when the data will be released yet.
